Sarah Trevelion, Techmodal Director

Balancing Two Callings: Reflections from 25 Years as a Reservist

As part of our support for Reserves Day 2025, we sat down with Sarah Trevelion, Director at Techmodal and a serving Army Reservist, to hear her reflections on a remarkable dual career spanning more than 25 years.

Sarah’s story is one of commitment, leadership, and balance — managing full-time responsibilities at Techmodal and BAE Systems Digital Intelligence while continuing to serve as a senior officer in the Army Reserve. Her insights offer a powerful reminder of the people behind the uniform, and the value Reservists bring to Defence and Industry alike.

From Cadet to Commanding Officer

“I joined the Army Cadet Force when I was 13 and absolutely loved my time there,” Sarah says. “Joining the University Officer Training Corps and then the Army Reserve felt like a natural next step.”

Today, Sarah holds a dual role as Director at Techmodal and SO1 Army (Reserves) within the Defence People Team — a career shaped by a deep understanding of both military operations and public sector transformation.

Making an Impact in Two Worlds

As a consultant, Sarah leads teams delivering data insight and digital solutions for Defence. As a Reservist, she’s led troops on overseas deployment and commanded a Reserve Regiment.

“It’s a chance to serve my country and know I’m making a small difference. I’ve had the privilege of working with extraordinary people and taking on some really unique challenges.”

One of those challenges included a six-month deployment to Kosovo in 2007, where Sarah, then 25, led a troop responsible for secure communications across the Balkans.

“That experience taught me so much about responsibility, leadership, and learning from the people around you.”

Balancing the Demands of Two Careers

It hasn’t always been easy.

“Being Commanding Officer of a Reserve Regiment while also working full-time — including a year as Director at Techmodal — was intense. It required ruthless prioritisation and a lot of support from colleagues and family.”

Sarah credits that support system — especially her husband, also a Reservist — for making it possible.

Skills That Cross Boundaries

From time management and people leadership to budget control and strategic thinking, Sarah’s civilian and military roles constantly reinforce one another.

“Both careers rely on people. Trusting and empowering your team is essential. And increasingly, my work in data and Defence strategy helps me see the bigger picture in both environments.”

Why Employer Support Matters

“I’m lucky to feel supported by both Techmodal and BAE Systems Digital Intelligence. But not every Reservist is in that position.”

Sarah is a strong advocate for the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS), encouraging more organisations to understand the value of employing Reservists, veterans, spouses, and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAV).

“At Techmodal, I’m proud to have helped lead us to achieving Gold ERS status — a milestone that recognises our commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community. I know first-hand the value that service experience brings to business, and I’d strongly encourage other organisations to consider signing the Covenant and joining the growing network of employers doing the same.”

Organisations looking to learn more about the scheme or begin their journey to Gold can contact Defence Relationship Management via Wessex RFCA for support and guidance.

Looking to the Future

With the UK’s Strategic Defence Review highlighting the need for a more flexible workforce, Sarah believes the role of Reservists is set to grow.

“We’re at a time of global uncertainty, and Reservists have a big part to play — bringing operational knowledge, specialist skills, and a different kind of adaptability.”

As for her proudest moment?

“Commanding the Bristol Remembrance Parade in 2024, just before handing over command. Seeing the Regiment together and reflecting on everything we’d achieved — that will stay with me forever.”

Final Thoughts: Why Become a Reservist?

“It’s a challenge, but it’s worth it. You’ll gain skills, confidence, unforgettable experiences, and you’ll meet some of the best people you’ll ever work with.”

If you’re curious about joining, visit the MOD Reservists Portal to learn more or begin your application.

At Techmodal, we’re proud to support those who serve — through flexible working, advocacy, and active participation in VetNet, BAE’s network for veterans and Reservists.

We thank Sarah — and all Reservists — for their ongoing contributions to both national security and public sector progress.
