Strengthening medical readiness through evidence-led planning

Solution

Our consultancy collaborated on a joint project with our Operational Analysis (OA) and Modelling teams to better quantify medical requirements by:

  • Analysing the operational patient pathway across facilities, focusing on different types of beds (e.g., resuscitation, ICU).
  • Developing detailed models incorporating numerous variables (e.g., injury type, severity, and timing), supported by extensive data analysis from military and open-source data.
  • Leveraging algorithms to explore and enhance the robustness of the data, resulting in a dynamic simulation model.
  • Verifying and validating the CHIRON model to strengthen confidence in its outputs, and supported its use as an evidence base during MOD-wide wargames evaluating future force structures and investment options.
  • Enhancing the model with more detailed analysis of medical transport timelines and the integration of equipment calculations to better reflect end-to-end capability planning.

This model was integrated into a dashboard that visualises key metrics such as casualty severity, individual treatment requirements, and surgical prioritisation, while accounting for logistical constraints like bed availability and transportation.

Outcome

The project delivered a powerful decision-support tool that:

  • Provided actionable insights into improving hospital configurations, bed allocations, and evacuation strategies.
  • Enabled simulations of various scenarios (e.g., hospital attacks, surges in specific treatment needs) to inform emergency preparedness and response efforts, ultimately improving patient survival rates.
  • Supported medical planners in understanding how NHS and deployed Defence medical systems interact during large-scale casualty events, strengthening preparedness and informing national-level medical planning.
