ABOUT THE ROLE
We’re looking for a Wargaming Designer to design and deliver realistic, immersive wargames that help Defence explore complex decisions and future challenges. You’ll turn strategic and operational problems into playable scenarios that drive insight, learning, and innovation — from tabletop exercises to multi-domain simulations.
About the team
You’ll be part of our specialist Wargaming team — a mix of analysts, designers, and military subject matter experts who work collaboratively to turn complex Defence problems into playable, insightful scenarios. Together, we blend analytical precision with creative design to deliver wargames that inform strategy, strengthen capability, and support faster, smarter decisions across Defence.
What you’ll be doing
- Design and develop analytical or educational wargames that simulate real-world or future operations.
- Create and refine scenarios based on current doctrine, geopolitics, and Defence objectives.
- Develop wargame mechanics, rules, and systems that capture the right data and keep participants engaged.
- Plan, conduct, and refine internal and client-facing playtests to ensure balance, realism, and immersion.
- Collaborate with analysts and military SMEs to ensure designs reflect realistic contexts and data requirements.
- Manage event planning and logistics — venues, materials, personnel, and schedules.
- Support the wider wargaming business through tool development, documentation, and continuous improvement.
- Contribute to cross-functional projects across Techmodal and BAE Systems Digital Intelligence.
What you’ll bring
- Strong knowledge of UK Defence, including Joint Warfare and single-Service operations.
- Experience designing or delivering military simulations, analytical games, or strategic exercises.
- Understanding of how wargaming supports experimentation, concept development, and operational analysis.
- Proven ability to structure complex problems into clear, playable designs.
- Collaborative, confident communicator comfortable working with senior stakeholders.
- Creative problem-solver with attention to analytical rigour and usability.
- Practical experience leading or contributing to event design, playtesting, and delivery.
