ABOUT THE ROLE
We’re looking for a Wargaming Analyst to join our Decision Support community, helping Defence understand complex scenarios and make better decisions through evidence, insight, and structured analysis. You’ll work at the intersection of data, research, and operational understanding — helping design, run, and evaluate analytical wargames that shape strategic thinking and capability planning across Defence.
About the team
You’ll join our Wargaming team — a multidisciplinary group of analysts, Defence professionals and researchers who bring together academic rigour, operational experience and data-led thinking. The team designs, delivers and analyses wargames that support some of the UK’s most critical Defence decisions, combining creativity and structure to deliver clarity where it matters most.
What you’ll be doing
- Plan and conduct research, literature reviews, and data discovery to inform analytical wargame design.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define core research questions and hypotheses that guide each wargame.
- Develop and implement Data Collection and Analysis Plans (DCAPs), defining what to measure, how, and why.
- Ensure analytical rigour and assurance in every wargame design and execution, guaranteeing quality and repeatability.
- Lead or support data capture during wargame execution, guiding teams on what to observe and record.
- Analyse qualitative and quantitative outputs to draw meaningful insights and conclusions.
- Produce high-quality reports and briefings that clearly communicate findings, implications, and recommendations.
- Contribute to business development and the advancement of Techmodal’s Analysis-Led Wargaming Framework.
What you’ll bring
- Knowledge of UK Defence, including how a military headquarters operates through various staff branches (SO3/SO2 or similar experience).
- Understanding of Concept, Capability and Warfare Development, and the role of Operational Analysis and Wargaming within them.
- Formal training in research and analysis (MSc/PhD or equivalent military/intelligence education).
- Ability to apply mission command principles and CAKE battle procedure to problem-solving.
- Experience engaging confidently and collaboratively with clients and stakeholders.
- Strong written communication, structuring, and analytical reasoning skills.
- A proactive, adaptable, and inquisitive mindset — methodical, yet creative in approach.
