20+ years as an embedded partner in Defence Support

Overview

For over two decades, Techmodal has supported Defence Support with operational analysis and modelling that informs key decisions across the force. But what began as a small technical requirement has evolved into something far more enduring—a fully integrated, cross-disciplinary team trusted not just for analysis, but for advice, delivery, and long-term thinking.

This isn’t transactional consultancy. Our team is embedded, consistent, and relied upon. We draw on insights from across Defence and industry, blending operational analysis with skills in software development, business analysis, and data science to deliver not just answers—but understanding.

What makes our support different

  • Trusted, embedded delivery

Our team is a true extension of Defence Support. We’re not just dropped in to do a task—we're involved in shaping it, challenging assumptions, and seeing it through. Clients often say they don’t need a full explanation—just hearing that a Techmodal person is assigned gives them confidence.

  • Continuous knowledge, not a consultancy handover

Unlike traditional consultancy models that deliver and disappear, our continuity means knowledge is retained, not lost. We build lasting relationships, carry forward insight from task to task, and bring a shared understanding that shortcuts delivery and strengthens outcomes.

  • More than just analysts

While our roots are in operational analysis, the work we do spans business analysis, data science, software development, visualisation, modelling, and decision support. Our value lies not just in crunching numbers, but in knowing what they mean—and how they influence real-world decisions.

  • Context-led, not request-led

Defence Support doesn’t just need analysts—it needs interpreters. We don’t just deliver what’s asked—we uncover what’s needed, test assumptions, and build the next layer of evidence. From ad hoc modelling to end-to-end capability assessment, our approach evolves with the problem.

Selected tasks and impact

Modelling support to PFT10 and AUXILIUM wargames
We provided detailed deployment modelling and in-room “hot OA” during key wargames, working with Dstl, FMC, and FLCs. Our insights directly shaped decisions briefed at 2* and 3* level and informed multiple references in the 2024 Strategic Defence Review.

Requirement and capability investigations

We’ve supported Defence Support in breaking down policy requirements and assessing the capability needed to deliver against them—across sustainment, deployment, and storage networks. These outputs feed directly into policy papers such as DPAs and DLSD Pt3.

Balance of Investment sequencing

Using our understanding of the deployment network, we modelled optimal sequencing of investments across different logistic enablers—informing decisions on when and where to prioritise spend. This followed on from AUXILIUM and supported cost-benefit analysis for investment pathways.

Joint Support Enabler threat resilience

We helped design and support mini-wargames to assess the resilience of JSEs to various threats (e.g. cyber). Our team delivered both game design and follow-up quantitative modelling to understand impacts on timelines and capabilities.

Innovation and futures

From additive manufacturing to sustainability initiatives, we’ve helped the Innovation team and CDLS explore future capability potential. Whether that’s calculating savings from 3D printing or modelling self-sufficiency through sustainable technologies, our insights support long-term thinking.

People and personnel modelling

We supported the People team in understanding how workforce structures impact support capabilities—bringing a quantifiable view to roles, requirements, and organisational decisions.

Historic and rapid-response support

Our team’s agility has been demonstrated through support to COVID response, Op INTERFLEX (tracking gifted equipment), and Ukraine-focused work that earned Chairman’s Awards. We’ve built dashboards in days and decision games for officer training—wherever the need arises.

Why it matters

When decision-makers are asked to justify change, assess risk, or invest with confidence—they turn to our team. Not because we offer a single skillset, but because we offer the right combination of experience, context and capability to work the problem through.

This is what embedded, outcome-led support looks like. We help Defence Support make sense of complexity—and act on it.
