Q&A with Conor

Conor Saxon, one of our software developers, first started working for Techmodal on a placement while studying at Bath University. After he finished his degree Conor accepted the offer of a permanent job with us. We talk to him about his work and experiences with Techmodal.

Tell us about your work placement at Techmodal, what was involved?

“I was on an industrial placement with Techmodal for 15 months starting in June 2015. I was quickly onboarded onto one of the largest development projects and most of my time was spent analysing the client’s data and understanding how this would support our software products.”

What made you decide to do your placement at Techmodal?

“I was looking for a small company in the Bristol area that would allow me to get stuck into a project rather than just be on the side lines. I was also looking for somewhere where I could learn as much as I could from talented colleagues. Techmodal was a good fit.”

Tell us about your degree?

“My degree is a BSc in Physics with Honours from the University of Bath. Where possible I chose computational-based modules.”

And after your degree you were offered a full-time job at Techmodal?

“Yes, I was offered the role at Techmodal before I had even left my placement, which allowed me to concentrate on my final-year exams rather than worry about finding a grad job!”

Tell us about your current job?

“I’m now an Oracle developer, but previously I’d been in both the data analytics and consultancy departments. Day to day, I’m designing and building different Oracle APEX products for various customers, but in between those jobs I’m also regularly onsite with the client, gathering requirements, running design reviews and understanding their data.”

What’s life like at Techmodal? How’s the work-life balance and are there opportunities to continue studying?

“Techmodal has a great family feel in the Development Team. There’s plenty of social events to get involved in and enough flexibility to accommodate individual working from home or flexitime needs.

While I’ve not had any formal continuation of my studies, the Dev Team has a very competent technical leadership which I’m constantly learning from.”

What do you think is the best thing about your job?

“Definitely working in a team environment where everybody is willing to help and teach each other.

What sectors do you cover?

“Techmodal has primarily been focused on Defence and in the last three years I’ve worked on projects for Army HQ, Navy HQ, Air HQ, DE&S, MOD Central, DSTL, Babcock and Rolls Royce, which I’ve really enjoyed.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

“I’d like to be in a more senior development role here at Techmodal, providing guidance to younger developers but always still learning from the people around me.”
